INF Fellow Wins Research Award

Frederick Grant, INF/EMF Long-term doctoral fellow at Emory University has won the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) /Nutritional Sciences Council (NSC) Graduate Student Research Award Oral Competition held at the 2011 ASN Annual Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology on April 9 in Washington, DC, for his research titled, "Assessment of iron deficiency in Kenyan children from capillary blood." Congratulations Fred!

2011 Carlos Slim Award in Health Awarded to INF Board Member

Dr. Reynaldo Martorell, INF Board Member and the Robert W. Woodruff Professor in International Nutrition at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health received the 2011 Carlos Slim Award in Health for his research. Read more here. Congratulations Dr. Martorell!

2011 PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011 PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health at www.pahef.org/awards.

The awards recognize innovative individuals, programs, institutions, and organizations advancing health in the region of the Americas, especially in Latin America and/or the Caribbean. Nominations Open Now for 2010 Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Leadership in Inter-American Health

Nominations are being accepted for the Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Leadership in Inter-American Health now through June 15, 2010, 5:00 p.m. EST, at www.pahef.org/horwitz. This award, presented by the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), recognizes the diligent work of leaders and their contributions to public health that result in improvements in the lives of people across Latin America and the Caribbean. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the award’s creation.

Nominees must be individuals whose professional achievements in any field of inter-American health stimulates excellence, has been innovative, and has impacted the health of populations across the borders of the Americas. They may be active in their careers, active though in formal retirement, or retired after an outstanding lifetime career.

The award also aims to encourage professionalism and dedication to the highest standards of improving public health for future generations. The awardee receives a cash prize, certificate of honor, and a paid trip to Washington, DC, to receive the award at the annual PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Event and is recognized before the ministers of health of the region at the PAHO Directing Council Meeting.

The Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Inter-American Health is part of the  Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, a joint initiative of PAHEF and PAHO.

Nominations may be made in either Spanish or English.

Past winners of the Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Inter-American Health include Dr. Eduardo A. Pretell Zárate, former minister of health of Peru (2000 – 2001), for his work in combating iodine deficiency disorders, and Dr. Cesar Victora for his outstanding dedication and contributions to maternal and child health in the Americas.

Dr. Abraham Horwitz, a national of Chile, served as director of PAHO from 1958 to 1975 and as president of PAHEF from 1975 to 2000. His professional career spanned six decades.

Rainer Gross Award

The memory and outstanding career contributions of Dr. Rainer Gross, a former stalwart of the Standing Committee on Nutrition (SCN), through his work in GTZ (Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit, http://www.gtz.de/en/) projects in Brazil, Indonesia and Peru, and at the UNICEF Nutrition Unit in New York City, is being honored with the first biennial Rainer Gross Prize: Recent Innovation In Nutrition And Health In Developing Societies. This $2,500 USD award from the Hildegard Grunow Foundation will be given to the winning applicant with the most outstanding innovation (research or applied), which represents the creativity for nutritional health solutions that typified the "Rainer way of doing things." The 19th ICN in Bangkok: A Great Success!

19th International Congress of Nutrition 2009 : Nutrition Security for All was held 4-9 October 2009 at BITEC, in Bangkok, Thailand. The INF funded 20 fellows to attend the ICN through 14 INF/Kraft and 6 INF/Ellison Medical Foundation Short-term Fellowships. We congratulate them on their participation in the Congress!
